The Chokugaku Gate and Bell Tower, Zōjōji Temple, Tokyo, 1880 - 1920
About the object
The elaborately carved Chokugaku Gate marks the entrance to the Bunshōin, the mausoleum of the sixth Shōgun Tokugawa Ienobu (1662-1712). Standing next to the entrance there is a bell tower, the bell of which was struck to mark the times of the day.
