About the object
Uchida Kuichi took this photograph of Empress Haruko in 1872, the year before his photograph of Emperor Meiji. Interestingly, the Japanese caption states “Empress Dowager,” a title she assumed after the death of her husband in 1912. Empress Haruko was childless; the next Emperor Taishō was born to one of Emperor Meiji’s concubines.
