Torii Gate, Nikkō, 1880 - 1920
About the object
Nikkō became a popular place to visit following the establishment of the Tōshōgū Shrine as the resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, during the early seventeenth century. Consequently, numerous shrines and temples were established in and around the city. Here we see a torii gate, marking the entrance to an establishment of this kind.
