Travelling Basket Seller, 1880 - 1920
About the object
A travelling bamboo seller with a decidedly unfriendly look is depicted with a great multitude of wares, all made from bamboo. Bamboo is a hugely-versatile material and was used in the manufacture of a large range of objects; it has long been highly prized for its durability and flexibility. Woven bamboo objects were made throughout Japan’s history, from the prehistoric Jōmon period to the present.
