About the object

Two women seated in a jinrikisha (origin of the English word rickshaw) carriage. They appear to be apprentice geisha with their older minder. Flowering wisteria hangs down from a trellis, a plant native to East Asia and brought to Europe during the first stay of Philipp Franz von Siebold in Japan (1823-30). This scene in a public park is attributed to the Italian photographer Adolfo Farsari (1841-1898), who owned a photographic studio in Yokohama.
