Unbekannter Fotograf

This is the famous Yoshiwara red-light district in Tokyo. In the early modern period, it was one of the few licensed quarters in Japan and the locations and its sex workers (also seen here) were depicted endlessly in woodblock prints by Utamaro and many other artists.
