Pietà, 1740 - 1750

About the object

The Vesperbild, also referred to as a pietà, has been documented as an iconographic image since the beginning of the 14th century. In this sculpture-in-the-round from the Upper Rhine, the typical motif of the Virgin Mary mourning her dead son, who has just been taken down from the cross, is reinforced by the "Sword of Pain". The attachment of mother and son, even in suffering, is at once an appeal to the viewer to join the sufferers.
