Shinmachi in Osaka: High-Ranking Courtesans Enjoying Themselves at the Ukamuse Restaurant from the series »Famous Restaurants in the Provinces«, um 1822
About the object
In Ukamuse, one of Japan's most famous restaurants, three courtesans in finely patterned kimonos enjoy themselves on the balcony. A woman is leaning over the parapet and watching the passersby. The venue was legendary, not only because it was described in literature and poetry, but also for its unusual sake bowls with a capacity of 1.3 litres.
