Procession cross ("Second Liebenau Cross"), um 1440
About the object
Like the reliquary cross in the adjacent display case, this processional cross is said to have reached Freiburg via sisters of the Liebenau convent, which was dissolved in 1563. It also alludes to the conception of the Tree of Life, with Mary and John standing on the spreading branches beneath Christ on the cross. The Four Evangelists, replete with their symbols, are positioned on the quatrefoil open ends of the crossbars.
