Float
Cassava graters, 1903 - 1905
About the object
The surface of this grater has been adorned stone fragments forming a zigzag pattern in the middle section and covered with black resin. The edges of the surface have been decorated with a meandering hatching. Graters of this kind are used to prepare bitter maniok, a starchy tuber. Bitter manioc tubers are poisonous in their unprocessed form. To render it edible, the maniok is grated on the board and the pulp is then squeezed through a tube, which separates the sour juices. The resulting flour is then sieved and can be used in various forms, for example, in the baking of flat breads.
