About the object

The sedan chair has been decorated with the coat of arms of the noble house von Althann. The family used it for short journeys around the city. The fact that the carrying poles and shoulder straps have survived is extremely rare. In order to lighten the load when carrying, the carriers laid the straps over their shoulder. Sedan chairs (also known as “litter” in English) were a mode of transport used well into the 19th century.
