About the object

Artemis, the Greek Goddess of Hunting, is the epitome of chastity and strength. She is depicted together with an animal, a hind in accordance with representational convention. The classical contrapposto of the otherwise archaic-looking bronze sculpture echoes templates from Antiquity. In its raw form and unfettered by sculptural adornment, this figure is in the tradition of the "Munich School", to which von Martin belonged. Her study sketch on the subject of Artemis (G 85/084), which is related to the motif, is probably the starting point for this sculpture.
