About the object
Christ nailed to the cross is mourned by his mother Mary and his favourite disciple, John. Longinus wields his spear and Stephaton proffers the vinegar sponge to Christ. This rare late-Carolingian engraved crystal is one of the Augustiner Museum's greatest treasures. The ancient technique of the stone and gem engraving dates back to the Roman Empire.
