Sweetgum

Liquidambar europaea, Mittelmiozän

About the object

A fruiting head or infructescence from the European sweetgum tree is embedded in this fossilised mud. It has a long stem, radial outward growth and consists of numerous capsules, which contain the tree’s seeds. In principle, the fruiting heads of sweetgum trees alive today follow the same design as this fossilised example here. A number of Liquidambar fruits have been preserved among the rocks in the Bohlinger Schlucht, however, these are vulnerable to weathering. They are fragile due to their structure and easily break away from the slabs of rock.
