Freiburg played an important role in the Baden Revolution. Two of the centre protagonists were the silk factory owner and parliamentarian Carl Mez, and the historian and political scientist Karl von Rotteck. The latter had already participated in drawing up the 1818 Constitution of Baden. His liberal demands brought him into conflict with the nobility and the government.
