About the object

Rider and horse have paused briefly on their journey in this small-format painting. Equestrian scenes like this, mostly set in the Caucasus, were part of the repertoire of the Baltic German artist, Alexander Amandus von Wahl. This depiction of a Boer leader, however, shifts the action to South Africa.
