Franz Xaver Winterhalter
The Writer Karl Spindler, 1830
About the object
Karl Spindler was one of the most widely read German popular writers of his time. In a self-confident, theatrical pose, Winterhalter pays homage to the writer who was born in Breslau. Even in this early painting, his deployment of colour masterfully focuses our attention on the writer’s face and hand.
