Maria Lassnig
Body Awareness (Self-portrait), 1958
About the object
The painter's awareness of her body provides the impetus for her painting. In a spontaneous painting process, Maria Lassnig tries to use »reality colours«, a »feeling of pressure while sitting and lying« or »feelings of tension and spatial expansion« (Lassnig) in layers of paint applied with a spatula. The discussion here revolves around the awareness of one's own body and the question of how and, indeed, whether such processes can be depicted.
