About the object

This textile fragment originally belonged to a wall hanging or bench drape together with other fragments. The escutcheons denote important Freiburg and Breisgau nobility and patrician families, who presumably donated it to the Adelhausen monastery. In three discrete fields, from left to right, we see Samson vanquishing the lion, the Vorgassen family coat of arms (four times) and Aristotle's mount, Phyllis. In a similar way to the so-called Malterer tapestry, the series of motifs draws upon the theme of "Weiberlisten" (woman’s deceits).
