About the object
Bags made from raffia palm bark played an important role in grassland societies in Cameroon. Certain raffia bags provide clues to the status of the person carrying them or giving them away. This can be recognised from the design, such as motifs or particular weaving techniques. Some patterns are restricted to members of secret societies. The bags here in Freiburg are quite small in comparison. They were probably made either for children or, more likely, for trade with colonials.
