Bag
1870 - 1906
About the object
These bags are woven from raffia, the bast fibres of the raffia palm, on looms. The long woven segments are then sewn at the side and carried as bags. They come in a variety of patterns and with different handles. As seen here, the loops attached to the sides are still intact. In the past, these handles were associated with the village of Meta. Today, they are produced the same way everywhere. This weaving tradition is known to have existed in Cameroon since the sixteenth century.
