About the object
Tobacco pipes are sacred objects. Smoking them is a sacred act through which shamans connect with wakan tanka, a mysterious, all-pervading power. For the Dakota Sioux, the very act of assembling the individual pipe components initiates the ritual. For this reason, the pipe requires a special method of storage and display in the museum: it may be seen, but not assembled.
