About the object

This woven item was made from pandanus strips worn by pregnant women on Nauru. Even the fathers-to-be wore such small mats as a sign of their status. Ornaments made from black frigatebird feathers are often found on Nauru. The islanders were able to catch and tame the birds and thereby use the light feathers without killing the animals.
